The story presents a future in which people’s lives revolve around watching TV inside their homes. The Pedestrian: Directed by Alun Bollinger. Bradbury compares the new surrounding in the story with the ones of todays by adding a detailed description of the surrounding, 'firefly light appeared in flickers behind the window'. The social setting of The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury explores aspects related to living in a dystopia.A dystopia is a future society in which people go through suffering or injustice, typically as a result of a totalitarian regime or some kind of apocalypse. The Pedestrian is presented in a normal society at night time, when the youth of the area would usually be active. By providing this is the short story, Bradbury demonstrates that technology in the future will be available to do as the want, when they want.īradbury portrays his attitude and values through the story also by the use of setting.
Bradbury presents the police car as being semi-human in the way that it can move freely around and speak and communicate as freely as a human can.
Another character featured in the short story is the police car provided with personification. Bradbury characterises the main character, Mr Leonard Mead, to be displayed as an abnormal person, in the fact that he does what a normal person would do in today's society, allowing the readers to compare the two personalities with each other. The Pedestrian contain very little character showing to the readers how technology is turning people into zombie like creatures. Bradbury writes the short story using characterisation, setting and symbolism to aid his attitude in displaying the way technology has changed society and the social life of the society.īradbury uses characterisation in the short story displaying to the readers, future peoples personality and their character. The short story 'The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury creates a futuristic view displaying the negative way technology has taken over the society in the year 2052 A.D. As the future approaches the technology is rapidly increasing allowing people to achieve more activities in short amount of time. Technological activities create a faster means of getting a job done with ease. Technology is on of the most reliable resources available to man kind.
